Edie Carey will kick off the 2013 concert series at Starr’s Cave Nature Center on Friday, January 18 in the Leopold Loft at 7:30 p.m.

Born in Burlington, Vermont and raised in Boston suburbs by her English teacher father, therapist mother, and poet stepmother, Edie Carey couldn’t help but love to learn words. But her ear for music only became apparent after she took the stage in the back seat of her babysitter’s green Cadillac, belting out her own rendition of “Up Where We Belong.” It was not until her freshman year in college when Carey had two pivotal experiences that knocked her college plans off course-The Postcrypt Coffeehouse in New and learning Italian. At the coffeehouse she listened to such performers as Ani DeFranco and Lisa Loeb who inspired her to appreciate the quality of words regardless of their meaning or the melody in which they were framed. Also learning Italian inspired Carey to travel to Bologna where she taught herself to play the guitar. She made her first album in 1997. Since then she has been working as a full-time performing songwriter, touring rigorously to promote all of her independently self-released records.

Carey will be performing from her most recent release, Bring the sea. Years of performing as well as life experience have contributed to a clearer sense of her identity and a graceful acceptance both of herself and of the things beyond her control.

Carey will be performing at Starr’s Cave Nature Center on Friday, January 18. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. There is an admission charge of $10, and $2 for students. Refreshments will be served.
