Kids can learn how to ice fish at an ice fishing clinic sponsored by Des Moines County Conservation on Saturday, February 2 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Big Hollow Recreation Area, in Sperry. Clinic will meet at area E of Big Hollow. Turn left at stop sign within park. The clinic will begin with a quick lesson on ice fishing and ice safety. Each child participant will be given an ice fishing pole to fish with during the clinic and will get to take it home with them afterwards.

Children must be under the age of 16 and accompanied by an adult who will be able to help them apply the fishing knowledge learned at the clinic. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather as the clinic will take place outdoors. It is recommended to bring a chair or plastic bucket to sit on while fishing. Ice holes will be predrilled and bait and bobbers will be provided. All Iowa DNR fishing regulations apply. If the temperature is below 15° or if the ice is not adequate, the event will be cancelled and participants will be contacted. There is a $5 fee to help offset the cost of materials used in the provided ice fishing poles. Pre-Registration is required and there is a limit of 25 participants. Please call (319) 753-5808 or e-mail Katherine Brakeville to register.
